Letter from the founders

Butter is built out of pain.

We’re app developers, but more importantly, we’ve been self-employed for many years, and consequently have become unfortunately familiar with Xero, Sage etc. Accounting for sole traders is… awful. We have got used to spending hours reconciling transactions, used to tax calculations we don’t fully understand, and used to not knowing what’s actually going on in our self-employed finances. How much did I make this month? How much did I spend? Are my financials trending in the right direction? No idea.

Recently, having just paid an accountant ~£600 to do our accounts, we began experimenting with using AI to analyse our finances. It turns out that super-intelligence handles self-employed finances impeccably. Since then, we’ve been working on Butter. We believe Butter can deliver genuinely enjoyable accounting to sole traders across the UK, and alleviate the most painful part of going solo.
