Letter from the founders

Butter is built out of pain.

We’re app developers, but more importantly, we’re small-business owners, and consequently have become unfortunately familiar with Xero, Sage etc. Accounting for small businesses is… awful. We have got used to spending hours reconciling transactions, used to tax calculations we don’t fully understand, and used to not knowing what’s actually going on in our finances. How much did we profit this month? How much did we spend? Is there anything I should know about? No idea.

Recently, having just paid an accountant £480 to reconcile our actual accounts with what Xero was showing, we snapped and started building Butter. Since then, we’ve tested Butter with hundreds of small businesses across the UK, including our own. We believe Butter can deliver genuinely enjoyable accounting to business owners across the UK.
